Background and History
of The Oasis Experience, Inc.®

In 1999, Patricia Cunningham, M.S., LCPC and Linda Lucatorto, M.Ed, CPC, co-founded The Oasis Experience, Inc.® The impetus for their creativity was a result of their own divorces, after long term marriages.

Both Pat and Linda had been working at a Social Service Agency when this dreaded life experience hit them "like a ton of bricks".

Having professional background in Education, Counseling and Mental Health, they sought all the support and assistance that they could find. Being supportive of one another, they often discussed their individual quests. They discovered that something was missing or not available.

Although church sponsored support groups were available, there didn't seem to be any local resources for "Women Only" groups. Where could we find role models of women who successfully transitioned through this challenging time and had peaceful, joyful lives? Where could we feel that we were totally understood? Where could we find camaraderie and the hope of a positive future? Where could we gather important information while acknowledging the importance of self-care? Those were the questions and ideas that led to the birth of The Oasis Experience Inc.®

Pat and Linda shared a strong belief that women need to nurture themselves, learn to survive and then make the conscious decision to "thrive" after divorce. This was all about "Growing through divorce" as opposed to merely "Going through divorce.

In January of 1999, the very first Oasis Experience weekend retreat was held in Lake Geneva Wisconsin. The success of that initial program led to the development of the Empowerment Groups and Day Seminars.

What is unique to the The Oasis Experience Inc.® programs is that they are conducted in small group settings, which provide a comforting, nurturing and safe atmosphere.

Taking the initial first step in seeking help can be a very threatening experience for women. When women join an Empowerment Group or come to their first seminar, they do not walk into large room or sterile auditorium like setting. The small groups, in lovely settings, provide the comfort, privacy and support that are so crucial during this time of uncertainty and upheaval.

Comments on a recent program evaluation forms underscores the benefit of Oasis programs.

"I thought the experience was offered in a very loving, caring, thoughtful way. Thank you for this outlet, the camaraderie and sisterhood….finally people listened!"

"Exploring, examining & understanding the process one goes through during divorce was very helpful. It helped me to further understand the feelings and emotions that filled my existence. I feel less alone."
